5 easy ways to use props in your personal brand taster session

So you’ve booked a personal brand photography taster session! But how do we make sure your photos are unique-to-you?

As you prepare for your session, have a think about ways to make your personality and values shine through.

Props are a great way to do this. Here are five tips to spark your imagination.

1: Bring in your brand colours

A scarf or some jewellery; a cushion on the sofa, or a file, notebook or pen beside you on the table. These are some ways to incorporate pops of colour in an almost incidental way. You can also consider getting covers for laptops, phones that match your brand.

2: Showcase what you do during the day

If you’re a podcaster, bring your mic. Photographers, bring a camera. If you write, your laptop, or perhaps you have a well-thumbed reference book (unless it’s just me who’s that old-school).

You can also think beyond tools of the trade and include props from other aspects of your daily routine, such as exercise, journaling or family schedules.

3: Create a connection with potential clients

You could be leafing through a book or magazine that will resonate with your audience; or writing something in your notebook that has a message they’ll connect with. Be authentic with this - the magic happens where your interests and values genuinely overlap with those of your clients.

4: Personal touches

Flowers, art materials, an item you’ve collected on your travels… your imagination is the limit. This is more about styling your session with items that say something about your personality, tastes and interests. Little touches that give clients hints of what you’re all about.

5: Detail shots

Close ups of your hands typing on your laptop or of your coffee mug on your desk might be a bit cliched, but that’s because they make for versatile ‘stock photos’ that can be used in many ways.

Make them unique by personalising these shots as much as you can, whether that’s with signature jewellery, your favourite mug or simply your brand colours as above.

These tips help you think about how to easily style a photo session with props. Use them to stamp your brand and personality on any location.
