Strawberry Hill House wedding | Lusana + Omar

As a London wedding photographer I've documented weddings at many quirky, interesting and historic venues. But when Lusana and Omar told me they were planning a literary-and-cat-themed Strawberry Hill House wedding, I knew this was going to be one to remember.

The couple had lots of sweet surprises for their guests - literally, in the form of vegan cupcakes and a pick & mix sweetie table.

And then covid happened. Finally, after rescheduling twice - only 18 months late - they had their day, and of course it was well worth the wait.

If you don’t know it, Strawberry Hill House is a grade I listed villa in the gothic revival style (in fact was what started the gothic revival movement), built by eccentric aristocrat Horace Walpole in Twickenham the 18th Century. After falling into disrepair it was restored and reopened to the public in 2010. It is chock full of atmosphere and surprises.

Lusana got ready with her sister in the Holbein Chamber, with its lilac walls, domed ceilings and Tudor artworks. I always advise couples to choose a getting-ready spot with lots of natural light, and the Holbein’s large bay windows certainly ticked that box. There was so much window Lusana had to keep ducking out of sight as Omar and their guests began to gather at the entrance below.

Lusana and Omar had a quick first look moment in the Holbein, before entering the Gallery together for their ceremony.

The Gallery really has to be seen to be believed. With its crimson walls, ornate gold-vaulted ceiling and gothic art, it perfectly suited the wedding day Lusana and Omar had been planning for all this time. The ceremony was short and sweet - the couple had been officially married earlier so this was a very personal exchange of vows with readings by their two best men.

We then moved into the garden for drinks and photos while the Gallery was transformed for the wedding breakfast. There was definitely no shortage of great spots for portraits. From the gothic Library to the garden, complete with an excellent shell seat, a reproduction based on Walpole’s own descriptions.

The couple had lots of sweet surprises for their guests - literally, in the form of cupcakes and a vegan pick and mix sweetie table. As wedding favours they had individually-picked novels for each guest. Being a literary couple who met working in a bookshop, their speeches were, of course, brilliantly written, warm, emotive and funny.

After the meal, everyone retired downstairs for cake, cupcakes, a photo booth and dancing. The old portraits overlooking the dance floor made for a unique atmosphere that complimented the indie rock vibe of the playlist the couple had selected themselves. An epic end to a brilliant and long-awaited celebration.
